The motorcycle division of BMW is actually ‘BMW Motorrad’, which started producing motorbikes in Germany in 1923. Those first bikes featured the flat-twin boxer engine which is still used in numerous BMW bikes today. All the BMW models have a letter prefix which tells you which engines they use, with the F series of parallel twins, the single-cylinder G series, the R twin-cylinder boxer engines, the K four cylinder and six cylinder bikes and the S series, which started with the S1000RR, has a 999cc inline-four engine.
The most biggest selling models are the R1200GS and R1200GS Adventure, which are extremely popular for touring and adventure riding. That’s partly attributed to their use by Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman on their two-wheeled television expeditions. The off-road side of BMW also includes six Dakar Rally wins and new BMW G450X enduro bike for the more hardcore off-road rider.
The BMW S1000RR has led to BMW entering the World Superbike championship, along with a rumoured MotoGP entry in the future. The factory BMW Motorrad team is fielding Britain’s Leon Haslam alongside Troy Corser in 2011, with James Toseland and Ayrton Badovini in the BMW Motorrad Italia squad.
