BMW R 1200 ST

BMW R 1200 ST

R 1200 RT and the R 1200 ST have been designed for dramatically reduced weight compared to the preceding models as well as an impressive boost in maximum power from the all-new 1170cc, four-valve-per-cylinder Boxer twin.
the new Boxer engine produces 110 hp, 15 hp more than the outgoing R 1150 RT’s — and even 10 hp more than the R 1200 GS’s engine — while retaining a broad, flat torque curve. Moreover, the R 1200 RT weighs an astounding 70 pounds less than the R 1150 RT, while the R 1200 ST undercuts the R 1150 RS by an amazing 55 pounds

As on the R 1200 GS, the RT/ST engine employs the latest BMS-K engine management system. This is a completely integrated fuel- and spark-delivery system that uses sophisticated electronics fed crucial information by a host of sensors throughout the motorcycle. Anti-knock control allows the use of mid-grade fuel without risk of engine damage yet also maintains peak engine output when it is fed premium fuel. In this way, there are no compromises; the engine does not need to be “detuned” in the event premium fuel is not available.

BMW R1200GS rear tire change

BMW R1200GS. According to Iain, "It was harder to mount than a TKC but nothing terrible. I did it with the two Motion Pro spoons and no lube." Iain will spend Memorial Day weekend pre-running for next month's BMW XPLOR Pacific Northwest Adventure Rally and we're eager to see how the Kenda Big Block handles the terrain. Stay tuned for additional updates as Iain puts some miles on this tire.

BMW SALES IN MARCH 2011 BREAKS ALL RECORDS WITH EMERGENCE OF CHINA AS LARGEST MARKET

BMW first-quarter new-car sales in china were the highest ever. China overtook the United States as the group's largest single market in the first quarter, cementing its place as the biggest driver of growth for the premium car industry. March sales that broke all previous records as its three largest markets posted double-digit growth.

bmw sales in march eclipsed the previous monthly record from last June, thanks to strong showings for its 1 series volume model and a good start for the revamped 3 series.

Sales in China rose by 40 percent to 90,063 cars
• Head of Marketing and Sales, Peter Schwarzenbauer: “New Audi A6L will
further boost growth”
• 31,505 vehicles delivered in March sets new record

Audi continues its success story in China: The company sold 90,063 automobiles in China and Hong Kong in the first quarter of 2012 – a year-on-year increase of 40 percent.

Group sales in China grew 41.1 percent to 30,593 last month and by 36.8 percent to 80,014 for the quarter. In the United States, March sales climbed 13 percent to 29,806 and 16.6 percent to 75,729 for the quarter. 2011 BMW K1300S bmw heavybike

2011 BMW K1300S BMW HEAVYBIKE

BMW K1300S can not be forgotten. The Bavarian delivers a sport bike purpose built for the road – its K1300S. Some testers fancy the restrained growls of the BMW K1300, but the Four does exhibit a mellower demeanor than all save the Suzuki. Partly to blame is a faint sensation of lag in the fueling. Another irk at the throttle is pronounced engine braking that chops up deceleration. Curiously, the smooth engine can exhibit some buzz – though nothing close to the invasive vibes of the Kawasaki.

While not too distracting, the Beemer’s shaft drive feels out of place in the sportbike realm. Less refined than the  shaft-driven Honda, the final drive doesn’t make itself known until downshifts.
The stout Bavarian feels the heaviest, even if the scales say otherwise (the Honda is 18 pounds heavier). Sensations of it being the broadest and longest bike is confirmed by physical measurement, and riders didn’t need a spec sheet to guess the Beemer sports the longest wheelbase at 62.4 inches. This helped it run the fastest quarter mile time but makes the bike feel big.

BMW K75C SPECIAL FEATURES

BMW K75C SPECIAL FEATURES

BMW K75C :The "building-brick" principle of the BMW K75 as the next logical step in K100 technology goes something like this: The designers will tell you the bikes differ only in the disappearance of one cylinder and the rebending of the frame's front downtubes. But ask them about the K75's combustion chambers: "A little different," comes the answer. And the ignition curve? "A little different." Suspension front and rear? "A little different." Fuel delivery? "Also different, ein bisschen." Clearly the 75 is its own motorcycle—even a ride around the block tells that story.

BMW K75C : Out on the road, this weight redistribution makes a phenomenal difference. The rider's perception of overall trimness is such that unknowing riders jumping off a K100 and onto a K75 might think they'd also jumped out of 100 pounds or more. Indeed, weight loss and redistribution were claimed to be the key factors in BMW's decision to make the K75 a triple and not just a short-stroke K100. Although shortening the 100's stroke would have raised the redline and cost less than developing the triple, BMW estimates it would have saved only a pound of mass.

BMW K75C :  In case you've forgotten how unique the K-bikes really are, let's review some engineering details. A longitudinal crankshaft transmits power to a second engine output shaft lying parallel to the crank. The last web of the crank, cut as a helical-toothed gear, meshes with the clutch drive and attached output shaft, while the nose of the crank drives two overhead cams via a roller chain and also controls ignition-pulse duties. The front of the output shaft drives the oil pump and the water pump. Spinning at crankshaft speed but in the opposite direction, the output shaft cancels any torque reaction. Bosch LE\Jetronic fuel injection feeds each cylinder at its intake port.

BMW K75C :  Although the K75 closely resembles the four-cylinder K100 in general layout and concept, making the triple design work necessitated significant changes. First the crankshaft, set with its rod journals at 120-degree intervals, delivers one firing impulse for every 240 degrees of crank rotation. The crank's 70.0mm stroke pulls 67.0mm pistons through an undersquare cylinder configuration measuring the same as the K100's, but the pistons themselves are not the flat-crowned slugs of the 1000cc bike; rather they have slightly domed crowns with two valve-relief pockets to boost the 750's compression ratio up to 11:1 from the K100's 10.2:1.

BMW K75C :  Give some thought to these compression numbers. The 750 CR king is Yamaha's FZ, running 11.2:1 figures; Suzuki's GSX-R has 10.6:1 pots. These bikes have complex four- and five-valve heads, along with sophisticated combustion-chamber design—both BMW's K-bikes use two-valve heads. K100 combustion chambers also have a prominent squish band, a design feature completely.eliminated on the 750. Yet our K75 never pinged during testing, even when run on unleaded super at 91 octane

BMW K75C :  Furthermore, the K75's soft, long-travel suspension harries the rider engaged in hard braking. Staff opinion concerning the 750's front binders is divided: fast riders like the Brernbo's powerful grip; less racetrack-inspired individuals find its touch tough to modulate. The BMW has no shortage of braking power at hand and foot: the double discs will lock up the none-too-skinny front wheel on command, likewise the rear. Like those of the last K100 and R80 we rode, though, our K75's brake lever had a good deal of initial travel and a very narrow, medium-pressure arc of engagement. The combination of a hard-to-modulate, grippy front brake

BMWs, much of the package's appeal. Our K75C's bar was about perfect for all testers. The clutch is smooth, with a powerful, linear engagement, but, like the brakes, comes on strong in the last few degrees of throw; you'll not be speed-shifting on the Beemer. The K75 feels to have nowhere near the flywheel effect of the K100, and the K100 had nothing compared to the boxers. Still, the 750 takes off quickly from low engine speeds. The shifter is a long-travel device, but crisp, and gearbox ratios complement the engine's power curve well. Although the throttle is also a long-travel affair, fuel injection means it can use light return springs, a blessing after 150 miles of winding roads. The injection system itself was flawless on our 750, as we've come to expect.

bmw record sales

BMW Record Sales: E5WNNTFUYA49

BMW announced it set a new record for first quarter motorcycle sales, surpassing the previous record by 5.5%.
General Director of BMW Motorrad, attributes the record first quarter to strong performance in regions such as the U.S., Brazil and Australia where the riding season is already well under way. Last year’s low sales were a result of an intentional scaling back of inventory but the subsidiary is ready to start rolling out new products such as its Nuda 900 streetbikes. According to BMW, customers bought 2,642 Husqvarna motorcycles over the first quarter of 2012, a 36.2% increase from the 1,940 units sold in the same quarter of 2011.

BMW 2010 S1000RR VIDEO RIDING ON THE RACE TRACK

BMW 2010 S1000 RR VIDEO

ABOUT BMW  We can’t lie; the pipe is expensive carrying a price tag of nearly $2000. But for that money you get one of the highest quality exhaust systems available. When viewed up close, the attention to detail is exquisite. Every weld is precise and the finish of each component seems to help justify its lofty price. On the scales the pipe weighed 13.1 pounds less than stock unit which in turn reduces the Beemer’s fully fueled curb weight to 437 pounds

BMW rocked the sportbike and high-performance motorcycle world last year with the release of the 2010 BMW S1000RR. This two wheeled missile went on to win both the shootouts in its rookie year. BMW’s first true Superbike had our heads spinning with the cannonball-like hit of its Inline-Four engine and advanced electronics package that made it easier to command whether you’re blasting.

In our stationary sound tests the R-77 delivers a significantly louder exhaust note with our sound meter registering 88 decibels, six points above stock. At half of maximum rpm (7000) the difference wasn’t quite as big only cranking out two more decibels than stock (100).

Around the racetrack are where the handling improvements are most notable but we also like the way the bike rode on the street. The back end of the bike felt much higher than before but within a few turns we were comfortable with its new attitude. Yank on the twist grip and the rear end squats more predictably than before. It doesn’t just squat, spin and rebound like it did when it was stock. It feels like the rear tire bites into the pavement harder. This allows the rider much greater control when modulating power slides off corners.

Hypersport Comparison 2012 BMW S1000RR

BMW 2012 BMW S1000RR Hypersport Comparison

Where those Hyperbikes glide across the pavement absorbing bumps and potholes with ease, the BMW’s suspension translates every inch of the pavement directly to the rider. A great quality for sure on the racetrack or your favorite back road, however on most other surfaces it can be overwhelming and make it less comfortable for longer rides. While acceptable for its class, the front fairing and windscreen aren’t even close to being effective at shielding the rider from wind on the highway, which again compromises the comfort quotient.

At freeway speeds the level of engine vibration can’t be deemed bad, it’s more significant than the other bikes plus the mirrors don’t offer as clear of what’s behind. However it’s not all negative, as the German bike is the only machine to offer electronic heated hand grips as an option straight from the factory—a big plus when riding in cooler weather. The digital instrument display is easy to read but lacks a fuel gauge.

At the drag strip the BMW proves to be a much more difficult motorcycle to launch. Its smaller wheelbase (2.3 inches shorter than the Japanese bikes), higher center of gravity, and snappy top-end biased powerband make it very tricky to get moving as the bike wants to wheelie the entire way down the road in the lower three gears. True, the S10000RR we tested employs wheelie control but it doesn’t offer the correct calibration for it to be really useful in an advanced rider’s hands. So we left it off for the test.

Even still the Beemer shot off to 60 mph in 3.12 seconds putting it ahead of the Suzuki but behind the Ninja. It continued on through the quarter-mile in a time of 10.25 seconds at a speed of 147.1 mph. One particular feature that works in its favor is its optional electronic Gear Shift Assist. This allows for immediate upshifts by simply applying upward pressure on the gear shift lever which saves fractions of a second over a manual set-up. Another plus is the copious amount of feel available from the cable-actuated clutch, though it definitely isn’t as durable as the set-ups on the bigger bikes as cable tension had to be adjusted after each run.

Although it doesn’t fit the standard definition of a Hyperbike the S1000RR is such a well-rounded motorcycle that it’s easily competitive in the class. It’s got the acceleration plus the agility and handling that the bigger bikes could only dream of. Problem is it is nowhere near as comfortable to ride for extended periods of time. Plus, even with its fantastic rider safety aids including ABS, traction control and adjustable engine power modes, it still demands a lot of attention from its rider. Not only that but it is the most expensive bike in the test. However if none of those things bother you and you’re concerned only about speed the BMW will be hard to pass up.

BMW R1200CL

BMW R1200CL

BMW Yet despite all the chassis changes, it’s the new CL’s visual statement that represents the bike’s biggest break with its cruiser-mates. With its grip-to-grip sweep, the handlebar-mounted fairing evokes classic touring bikes, while the CL’s distinctive quad-headlamps give the bike a decidedly avant-garde look - in addition to providing standard-setting illumination. A pair of frame-mounted lowers extends the fairing’s wind coverage and provides space for some of the CL’s electrics and the optional stereo. The instrument panel is exceptionally clean, surrounded by a matte gray background that matches the kneepads inset in the fairing extensions.

Although based on the R 1200 C, the new CL includes numerous key changes in chassis, drivetrain, equipment and appearance, specifically designed to enhance the R 1200’s abilities as a long-distance mount. While it uses the same torquey, 1170cc 61-hp version of BMW’s highly successful R259 twin, the CL backs it with a six-speed overdrive transmission. A reworked Telelever increases the bike’s rake for more-relaxed high-speed steering, while the fork’s wider spacing provides room for the sculpted double-spoke, 16-inch wheel and 150/80 front tire

The CL’s riding position blends elements of both tourer and cruiser, beginning with a reassuringly low, 29.3-inch seat height. The seat itself comprises two parts, a rider portion with an integral lower-back rest, and a taller passenger perch that includes a standard backrest built into the top box. Heated seats, first seen on the K 1200 LT, are also available for the CL to complement the standard heated grips. A broad, flat handlebar places those grips a comfortable reach away, and the CL’s floorboards allow the rider to shift position easily without compromising control. Standard cruise control helps melt the miles on long highway stints. A convenient heel/toe shifter makes for effortless gearchanges while adding exactly the right classic touch.

Like all motorcycle companies, BMW is in business to make money. And while BMW's motorcycle business has been strong of late (with 2001 sales up 13.5% compared to 5% for the general motorcycle market and its worldwide sales doubled in the last four years, bringing total worldwide production up to 85,000 last year), BMW is still not hitting the most lucrative of segments, cruisers,  hard enough.

BMW accounts for just 2% of the American market, with sales anticipated to hit 15,000 for the first time. And while BMW ranks third in the Touring category, the long-distance class represents just 18% of the total on-road market in the U.S. Of the 813,611 streetbikes sold in the U.S. last year, the Cruiser category held 51% of the market. BMW's R1200C, introduced in 1997, dipped into that pie. The new R1200CL is meant to straddle the line between pure cruiser and touring bike for another bite at the pastry.
Complementing the fairing, both visually and functionally, the frame-mounted lowers divert the wind blast around the rider to provide further weather protection. Openings vent warm air from the frame-mounted twin oil-coolers and direct the heat away from the rider. As noted earlier, the lowers also house the electronics for the bike’s optional alarm system and cruise control. A pair of 12-volt accessory outlets are standard.

Like the K 1200 LT, the new R 1200 CL includes a capacious luggage system Web Directory as standard, all of it color-matched and designed to accommodate rider and passenger for the long haul. The permanently attached saddlebags include clamshell lids that allow for easy loading and unloading. Chrome bumper strips protect the saddlebags from minor tipover damage. The top box provides additional secure luggage space, or it can be simply unbolted to uncover an attractive aluminum luggage rack. An optional backrest can be bolted on in place of the top box. Of course, saddlebags and top box are lockable and keyed to the ignition switch.
