2012 BMW S1000RR Review [Video]
That BMW is a company with huge engineering resources shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone. After all, it’s been building motor vehicles for more than 90 years and has a German stereotype to uphold.
Nevertheless, my biggest surprise at the launch of the 2012 S1000RR was the boundless enthusiasm each engineer, no matter if gray hair or no hair, showed in regard to sportbikes. There’s a lot more to this performance-driven crew than just building transportation appliances, as we found out at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia, Spain, where the bike’s 2012 edition was sampled by the world’s media last week.
For example, Ralph Schwickerath, the S1000’s chassis project manager, is not only a mechanical engineer but a former racer who is nearly as quick as Jurgen Fuchs, a BMW test rider who has raced in 250cc and 500cc Grands Prix. And the RR’s dual project managers, Rudi Schneider and Josef Machler, were both suited up and ripping around the grand prix circuit in a rare display among OEM senior managers. And then there’s 58-year-old Markus Poschner, BMW’s general manager for the K and S series platforms, who chooses the hardcore S1000RR among BMW’s selection of more comfortable models when he takes his wife out for rides in the Alps.
The New BMW G-650 GS Heavy Bike
With its new BMW G 650 GS Sertão, BMW Motorrad has added a new, sporting chapter to the history of single cylinders in the BMW GS family. Whereas the G 650 GS thrilled riders with its lean, wiry off-road stature, the G 650 GS Sertão promises even more sporting characteristics, even greater off-road capabilities, and an even stronger desire for adventure.
And all of this without any sacrifice to the established virtues of a BMW single cylinder endure such as everyday practicality, appealing price-performance ratio, and playful riding properties.
Chassis for greater off-road practicality, optimized touring properties, and dynamic design.
On the technical side, the new G 650 GS Sertão uses the established liquid cooled, high-torque single cylinder engine of the G 650 GS with two overhead camshafts, fuel injection, and double ignition. Its 652 cc displacement delivers 50 hp at 6500 rpm and a max torque of 44 ft/lb at 5000 rpm.Whereas the G 650 GS chassis was developed primarily for country roads and light off-road use, the Sertão presents far greater off-road practicality in the form of longer spring travels and tighter tuning. In addition, it is fitted with wire spoke wheels.

BMW HP2 Sport Motorsport – uncompromisingly limited.
BMW HP2 Sport Motorsport – uncompromisingly limited.
The BMW HP2 Sport caused quite a stir with its race track appearances - rarely has a 2-cylinder flat twin bike caused the competition so much trouble, it even outdistanced many a 4-cylinder bike. In the last 24-hour race at the Oschersleben Speedweek, both machines entered in the race finished in the overall top 10. One reason for this performance is the DOHC cylinder head*, which is being used for the first time in this fascinatingly engineered enthusiast’s motorcycle.
For all ambitious sports riders and keen flat twin fans a unique limited edition of 400 is now to be produced: derived from the paint finish of the Endurance machine, it is finished in the colours Alpine White /Indigo Blue / HP Red. As in the racing machine, the rims are finished in Indigo Blue at the front and Alpine White at the rear. Otherwise all the familiar specifications apply, including the material - leading to a sensational dry weight of 178 kg - and the impressive performance figures. In short: take the opportunity to put it away right now - or else use it for what it was built for and order a second set of rims for the rain tyres along with it!
BMW HP2 Sport Specifications
- Technical data relate to the unladen weight (DIN)
- 1) According to guideline 93/93/EWG with all fluids, fuelled with at least 90% of usable tank volume
- 2) Unladen weight without fluids

High Performance Overview
Outstanding race results are inexorably linked with BMW Motorrad’s flat twin “Boxer” models. So it is an obvious step to build a high-end version! The result is the BMW HP2 Sport: the uncompromising realisation of the 24-Hour Endurance racer as a road machine. 100 per cent motor racing genes, licensed for the road. An exclusive sports machine by BMW Motorrad for motor racing connoisseurs and 2-cylinder enthusiasts which puts racing expertise into serial production – with power and authenticity. With an incredible air/oil-cooled 98 kW (133 bhp) and 115 Nm – a unique performance for a serial production “Boxer”!
For ambitious sports riders, the BMW HP2 Sport is the non plus ultra: consistent lightweight construction, excusive details and top-class materials give it truly unique quality. The self-supporting front and rear sections in carbon, even lighter forged wheels and filigree components reduce the dry weight to an impressive 178 kg. Exclusive motor racing features to be found in serial production for the first time such as the shift assistant which allows shifting without accelerator release and clutch disengagement, and the DOHC cylinder head with its four radially arranged valves. A maximum engine speed of 9500 rpm provides pure Grand Prix feeling!
Speed fans can enjoy complete banking freedom since the aerodynamic high-quality steel exhaust system has been moved under the engine and seat and ends in an attractive rear silencer in the single-section rear. The large-volume silencer provides an inimitable “Boxer” sound - an acoustic thrill for racers. The 2D GP dashboard derived from Moto-GP racing provides all information to the cockpit. The chassis, ergonomics and vehicle geometry are individually adjustable, guaranteeing excellent handling. This orientation to the rider’s personality is highlighted by the use of carbon: due the consistency of this material the trim is made almost entirely by hand, making every BMW HP2 Sport a unique specimen.
