bmw GS Trophy in the mountains

GS Trophy 2012 was the second marathon stage

Riding through the Paso Carirrifie into the forests of the Parque Nacional Lanin the riders hit a succession of terrain types, starting with clay and gravel roads over rolling hills, leading to deep sand on the plateau, then onto a tight and twisting mix of loam and gravelly tracks through the forest.

BMW Motorrad is looking for motorbike riders who are ready to take on the great adventure of a road trip across five continents. We'll be giving five bikers from around the world the chance to live almost every motorcyclist's dream.

What happens when something catastrophic happens in your life to prevent you from getting that sweet rush of joy and excitement from riding a motorcycle? In the case of Bert Pot, the lure of riding a motorcycle again was so strong that he set about making the impossible very possible.

New 2013 BMW Motorrad Rider’s Equipment

BMW Motorrad has added some great new products in their 2013 rider’s equipment catalog. You’ll find many of these soon at your local dealership but not all will be available in all areas. For example, don’t expect any BMW helmets to be imported into the United States

BMW Motorrad has been developing its own motorcycle helmets since 1961. The System 6 EVO helmet is the current highlight of the “BMW helmets” products and is yet again setting the standard in safety, comfort, and design. The Race helmet, an all new development by “BMW helmets,” is already being used by five racers in the International German Motorcycle Championship (IDM).

The boots that BMW Motorrad is offering riders boast a wide range of functions and appealing designs. Like their predecessors, the new Allround boot is intended for beginners. Sporting a new color and numerous improvements, the tried and tested Rally GS Pro boot is to go where motorcycle boots have to fulfil the highest demands: offroad.

Gloves are an indispensable part of motorcycle equipment. The BMW Motorrad range provides the right model for every taste. The GS Dry gloves for both ladies and men are watertight and breathable enduro gloves thanks to GORE-TEX® X-TRAFIT™. The summer will be providing two models, the Rallye gloves for offroad and the ProSummer gloves for tours, both characterised by their lightweight and highly robust designs

functional wear always embodies a special utility value. That’s good – and even better when it comes from the BMW Motorrad collection. Some excellent examples are the Ride shirts. Also, they are made of recycled materials, and so boost that good feeling of having contributed to sustainability. The new Ride windbreaker finds space in the smallest of pockets.

Presenting a wealth of high quality and useful wear and lifestyle products, the leisure collections from BMW Motorrad Style cannot fail to make the hearts of fans beat faster. Whether fantastically designed jackets and shirts for him and her, distinctive caps and belts, or high quality bags or sleeves for smartphones and tablet PCs – the collection fuels ideas for the perfect gift.

BMW THREE DAYS RACE

BMW THREE DAYS RACE

he Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain is making history, as Joan ‘Hurricane’ Barreda dominated the Baja Espana Aragon from start to finish aboard his Speedbrain-prepared Husqvarna TE 449. The legendary three-day race was held as the second round of the FIM Baja World Cup. Barreda staked his claim on this competition staged in the area of Zaragoza right from the beginning of Friday’s prologue. The Spaniard continued to set the pace on the opening special test on Saturday, where he managed to gap the field by four minutes.
This was a view shared by an overwhelmed team principal Wolfgang Fischer, who said, “I’m absolutely delighted to see Joan take his first major rally victory. This is a testimony of his capabilities. The Baja Aragon – the second round of the 2012 FIM Baja World Cup – has a long-standing tradition and is a very difficult race. It’s an event where you have to have the skills and the heart. We had a job to finish after last year’s inaugural attempt. It’s particularly special to add our own win to Stephane Peterhansel’s success in his Mini in the car category, making it a sweep for the BMW Group. Next stop for us is the Pharaons Rally in Egypt. Paulo Goncalves will be lining up as well and aiming to battle for a podium in the final world championship classification.”

Overall Ranking:
1. Joan Barreda, ESP, (Husqvarna TE449) – 6:00:52.0 (Husqvarna Rallye Team By Speedbrain)
2. Gerard Farres, ESP, 6:02:33.0, Bordone Ferrari Moto Italia, TM 530
3. Victor Rivera, ESP, 6:19:36.0, Club Aventura Touareg, KTM 530 Exc-R
4. Marc Guasch, ESP, 6:20:59.0, Gas Gas Factory, Gas Gas 450
5. Jordi Viladoms, ESP, 6:35:49.0, Bordone Ferrari Moto Italia, TM 530

BMW Record Sales for the Year IN 2012

BMW Motorrad sold 59,189 motorcycles worldwide in the first half of 2012. While that’s down 2.3% compared to the 60,580 it sold in the first half of 2011, BMW Motorrad says it expects significant growth in the second half and therefore expects to reach a new sales record for the year. For June 2012, BMW Motorrad sales were down 13.2% (10,271 vs. 11,831 in June 2011).

As expected, the economic situation in the southern European motorcycle markets in particular led to a marked decline in purchasing activity among motorcycle customers in June 2012.” said Heiner Faust, Head of Sales and Marketing BMW Motorrad. “From a worldwide perspective, motorcycle markets are developing unevenly. All in all, BMW Motorrad has been able to assert itself well within this difficult market environment. For example, we are the market leader in the over 500cc segment in Germany, Italy and Spain. We will be providing a powerful purchase impetus in the second half of 2012 with our innovative new products such as the maxi scooters C600 Sport and C650GT, the new GS models in the entry-level and mid-range segment and other product measures. We are well on the way to achieving an all-time retail high in 2012.”

Worldwide sales of BMW brand vehicles climbed to 139,869 units (prev. yr. 134,444 /+4.0%) in the month under review. A total of 747,064 BMW brand vehicles (prev. yr. 689,884) have been delivered to customers worldwide since the start of the year – an increase of +8.3%.
Worldwide sales for MINI climbed 3.9% to 32,337 vehicles in the month under review (prev. yr 31,112). Year-to-date, MINI sales are up +7.0% to 151,875 units compared to 141,915 in the first six months of 2011.

BMW Motorrad 2013 Model Updates

BMW Motorrad has announced updates to their 2013 model year lineup. Not all models, colors or packages will be available in all markets so contact your dealership for specifics. 35,000 Enjoy BMW Motorrad Days 2012

Three days of motorcycle mania have just come to an end, with this year’s BMW Motorrad Days breaking all previous records. The organizers of the annual BMW Motorrad Days were eager to get the party started early – one day early in fact – as the 2012 event celebrations started this year for the first time on a Thursday evening with a ‘warm-up’ party in Munich. Crowds of motorcycle enthusiasts flocked to the BMW Museum, which hosted this fun event to get everyone in the mood for a weekend of partying, BMW style.

One of the most disappointed guys out there was BMW Motorrad’s Chris Pfeiffer, who wasn’t able to perform his amazing stunt show because of the heavy rain. However, the freestyle ace would make up for it later. At the prestigious BMW Motorrad Zentrum flagship store, a selection of lucky ladies had assembled  for a rendezvous and ride-out with top male model Marcus Schenkenberg.

With the legendary opening party taking place on the Friday night, thousands of BMW bike-nuts arrived from across Europe and beyond to spend a full weekend immersed in the world of BMW Motorrad. As expected, the party lived up to its promises and as the Saturday morning sun shone on picturesque Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Bavarian town awoke to the familiar tune of Boxer engines, singles, parallel twins, fours and even six-cylinder machines making their way to the ‘Hausbergparkplatz’ for a day of fun-filled activities
Behind the scenes, the organization team was kept busy with ‘live chats’ via Facebook, so all the brand enthusiasts who couldn’t make the trip to BMW Motorrad Days were still able to closely follow the event online. The boys from Blitz Motorcycles answered questions from fans about their special custom BMWs, followed by stunt legend Chris Pfeiffer, globetrotter Michael Martin and former personal assistant to Nelson Mandela, Zelda La Grange, who just happens to be a huge BMW fan – and a GS rider! All spoke about their lives, passions, and love for the BMW lifestyle.

As has become the tradition on Saturday, Chris Pfeiffer took his spectacular stunt show to the streets of Garmisch-Partenkirchen town center, while back at BMW Motorrad Days, World Superbike stars Marco Melandri, Leon Haslam and Troy Corser were kept busy signing autographs and chatting to fans. The FMX freestyle riders wowed spectators around the main arena with an amazing display of gravity-defying tricks and moves, including ‘no-handers’, ‘no footers’, ‘fender-grabs’ and even back-flips.
For those who came to Garmisch-Partenkirchen – and there were over 35,000 of you – thanks for helping make it a fantastic event and a record-breaking year! All good things must come to an end though and although it’s always sad when BMW Motorrad Days finishes for another year, we can safely say that this year’s event was the biggest and best yet! Don’t forget that in 2013, BMW Motorrad will be celebrating its 90th birthday, so the party will be even bigger than ever before. Start planning your 2013 trip from July 5-7 now.

    PROTECTION OF BMW BIKE

BMW FINANCIAL SERVICES INTRODUCED NEW WAY OF PROTECTING BMW BIKE have the potential to significantly reduce the impact of physical and financial obstacles on riders of the German-made motorcycles.THIS PLAN plan will provide replacements should the covered BMW motorcycle’s tires or wheels suffer any road hazard damage during the plan period, which can be purchased in one-to-five-year increments.it protects a BMW motorcycle owner who financed his or her motorcycle through BMW Financial Services should their motorcycle be totaled or stolen and their insurance carrier determine its value as less than that of the loan balance. Replacement – never repair – constitutes a key part of the Motorrad Tire & Wheel Protection Product with OEM or OEM-approved parts installed when the originals are damaged due to road hazards, including glass, metal, potholes, debris, nails, blowouts, etc.

unlukily, road hazards are a fact of life and wheels and tires take the brunt of them. This program provides just the kind of protection our customers want.” Road hazards are everywhere, regardless of topography and climate,” said McPherson. “Now a BMW motorcyclist can ride out of the dealership secure in knowing regardless of the obstacles he or she might encounter, should something happen to a relatively expensive wheel and/or tire, a BMW-specific replacement is fully covered at no additional expense.

2012 BMW S1000 RR SPORTS BIKE

BMW has recalled 1,414 of its S1000RR sportbikes due to connecting rod issues. BMW says the 2012 models affected were built from Sept. 1, 2011, through April 10, 2012.

BMW says due to a manufacturing error, the connecting rod bolts may become loose during high engine temperatures, and/or high-engine operating speeds that could result in catastrophic engine damage.

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the connecting rod bolts free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin during May, 2012.

    BMW R 1200 ST

    BMW R 1200 ST

R 1200 RT and the R 1200 ST have been designed for dramatically reduced weight compared to the preceding models as well as an impressive boost in maximum power from the all-new 1170cc, four-valve-per-cylinder Boxer twin.
the new Boxer engine produces 110 hp, 15 hp more than the outgoing R 1150 RT’s — and even 10 hp more than the R 1200 GS’s engine — while retaining a broad, flat torque curve. Moreover, the R 1200 RT weighs an astounding 70 pounds less than the R 1150 RT, while the R 1200 ST undercuts the R 1150 RS by an amazing 55 pounds

As on the R 1200 GS, the RT/ST engine employs the latest BMS-K engine management system. This is a completely integrated fuel- and spark-delivery system that uses sophisticated electronics fed crucial information by a host of sensors throughout the motorcycle. Anti-knock control allows the use of mid-grade fuel without risk of engine damage yet also maintains peak engine output when it is fed premium fuel. In this way, there are no compromises; the engine does not need to be “detuned” in the event premium fuel is not available.

    2011 BMW K1300S bmw heavybike

    2011 BMW K1300S BMW HEAVYBIKE

BMW K1300S can not be forgotten. The Bavarian delivers a sport bike purpose built for the road – its K1300S. Some testers fancy the restrained growls of the BMW K1300, but the Four does exhibit a mellower demeanor than all save the Suzuki. Partly to blame is a faint sensation of lag in the fueling. Another irk at the throttle is pronounced engine braking that chops up deceleration. Curiously, the smooth engine can exhibit some buzz – though nothing close to the invasive vibes of the Kawasaki.

While not too distracting, the Beemer’s shaft drive feels out of place in the sportbike realm. Less refined than the  shaft-driven Honda, the final drive doesn’t make itself known until downshifts.
The stout Bavarian feels the heaviest, even if the scales say otherwise (the Honda is 18 pounds heavier). Sensations of it being the broadest and longest bike is confirmed by physical measurement, and riders didn’t need a spec sheet to guess the Beemer sports the longest wheelbase at 62.4 inches. This helped it run the fastest quarter mile time but makes the bike feel big.

    BMW K75C SPECIAL FEATURES

    BMW K75C SPECIAL FEATURES

BMW K75C :The "building-brick" principle of the BMW K75 as the next logical step in K100 technology goes something like this: The designers will tell you the bikes differ only in the disappearance of one cylinder and the rebending of the frame's front downtubes. But ask them about the K75's combustion chambers: "A little different," comes the answer. And the ignition curve? "A little different." Suspension front and rear? "A little different." Fuel delivery? "Also different, ein bisschen." Clearly the 75 is its own motorcycle—even a ride around the block tells that story.

BMW K75C : Out on the road, this weight redistribution makes a phenomenal difference. The rider's perception of overall trimness is such that unknowing riders jumping off a K100 and onto a K75 might think they'd also jumped out of 100 pounds or more. Indeed, weight loss and redistribution were claimed to be the key factors in BMW's decision to make the K75 a triple and not just a short-stroke K100. Although shortening the 100's stroke would have raised the redline and cost less than developing the triple, BMW estimates it would have saved only a pound of mass.

BMW K75C :  In case you've forgotten how unique the K-bikes really are, let's review some engineering details. A longitudinal crankshaft transmits power to a second engine output shaft lying parallel to the crank. The last web of the crank, cut as a helical-toothed gear, meshes with the clutch drive and attached output shaft, while the nose of the crank drives two overhead cams via a roller chain and also controls ignition-pulse duties. The front of the output shaft drives the oil pump and the water pump. Spinning at crankshaft speed but in the opposite direction, the output shaft cancels any torque reaction. Bosch LE\Jetronic fuel injection feeds each cylinder at its intake port.

BMW K75C :  Although the K75 closely resembles the four-cylinder K100 in general layout and concept, making the triple design work necessitated significant changes. First the crankshaft, set with its rod journals at 120-degree intervals, delivers one firing impulse for every 240 degrees of crank rotation. The crank's 70.0mm stroke pulls 67.0mm pistons through an undersquare cylinder configuration measuring the same as the K100's, but the pistons themselves are not the flat-crowned slugs of the 1000cc bike; rather they have slightly domed crowns with two valve-relief pockets to boost the 750's compression ratio up to 11:1 from the K100's 10.2:1.

BMW K75C :  Give some thought to these compression numbers. The 750 CR king is Yamaha's FZ, running 11.2:1 figures; Suzuki's GSX-R has 10.6:1 pots. These bikes have complex four- and five-valve heads, along with sophisticated combustion-chamber design—both BMW's K-bikes use two-valve heads. K100 combustion chambers also have a prominent squish band, a design feature completely.eliminated on the 750. Yet our K75 never pinged during testing, even when run on unleaded super at 91 octane

BMW K75C :  Furthermore, the K75's soft, long-travel suspension harries the rider engaged in hard braking. Staff opinion concerning the 750's front binders is divided: fast riders like the Brernbo's powerful grip; less racetrack-inspired individuals find its touch tough to modulate. The BMW has no shortage of braking power at hand and foot: the double discs will lock up the none-too-skinny front wheel on command, likewise the rear. Like those of the last K100 and R80 we rode, though, our K75's brake lever had a good deal of initial travel and a very narrow, medium-pressure arc of engagement. The combination of a hard-to-modulate, grippy front brake

BMWs, much of the package's appeal. Our K75C's bar was about perfect for all testers. The clutch is smooth, with a powerful, linear engagement, but, like the brakes, comes on strong in the last few degrees of throw; you'll not be speed-shifting on the Beemer. The K75 feels to have nowhere near the flywheel effect of the K100, and the K100 had nothing compared to the boxers. Still, the 750 takes off quickly from low engine speeds. The shifter is a long-travel device, but crisp, and gearbox ratios complement the engine's power curve well. Although the throttle is also a long-travel affair, fuel injection means it can use light return springs, a blessing after 150 miles of winding roads. The injection system itself was flawless on our 750, as we've come to expect.
