Adventure touring documentary star Charley Boorman and his BMW R1200GS Adventure have traveled a long way together, but the motorcycle had a bit of an adventure on its own after thieves stole the bike.
The stolen BMW wasn’t the one Boorman rode with Ewen McGregor in “Long Way Round” (that was a R1150GS Adventure) or the one used in the sequel “Long Way Down“. Boorman did ride it on his last project, “Charley Boorman’s Extreme Frontiers: Canada”.
The GS wasn’t gone for long however. The motorcycle was equipped with Bike Trac, an anti-theft GPS tracking system from U.K.-based Road Angel Group.
The Bike Trac system was triggered at 4:29 am GMT on April 21 and
tracked to a location in London. The trail then led to the nearby town
of Watford.
Armed with a warrant, police were able to track Boorman’s GS to a
garage where it was found partially dismantled, just hours after it was
stolen.
“Naturally I was pretty shocked to learn that my bike had been
stolen,” says Boorman. “In normal circumstances the chance of ever
seeing a bike again after it’s been stolen is very slim. But with the
knowledge that it had a Bike Trac unit fitted, I was fairly hopeful. To
get the bike recovered so soon really is a testament to the system
indeed.”

Since we haven’t man up yet to take on the task of riding these
wonderful beamers, we’ll let Jonathon entertain us and give us some
insight in the BMW’s Motorcycle School. The idea was that we would hone a few things we did know and learn a few
things we didn’t, guided by some of the best instructors and piloting
some of the best machinery in the business. The first day we tackled —
sometimes literally — motorcycles. It was a cool, rainy morning in
Greenville, South Carolina when we straddled the BMW F 650 GS for an
education in 2-wheeled manners. It would also turn out to be a wet,
muddy, and thoroughly rewarding workout.
Dare we say it, but BMW motorcycles are the Audi cars of the U.S. scene.
You need to invest the time to understand them, get to know them,
before you can fully appreciate them. BMW cars are The Ultimate
insert-adjective-and-noun-here — it’s impossible not to understand that.
Audi cars are “Vorsprung durch Technik,” commonly translated as “What?”
Yet the “technik” school is where the BMW lives: it calls its bike
division “Motorrad.”
Looking at motorcycles, inventive engineers have also tried time and again
to offer the enthusiast the thrilling concept of a straight-six power unit.
But while a few engines in straight-six configuration have indeed been fitted
in motorcycles both lengthwise and crosswise, the straight-six has never
really made a genuine breakthrough neither on production models nor in motorcycle
racing.
Depending on the way the engine was fitted, six cylinders in-line inevitably
made the engine either very long or very wide, creating disadvantages in terms
of the running gear, weight distribution, and the centre of gravity. A further
drawback was much higher engine weight usually setting off the benefits of
extra engine power.
Munich. Six-cylinder power units have always had particular appeal, offering
not only supreme smoothness and refinement, but also superior power and performance
as well as a truly emotional driving – or, in this case, riding –
experience. A further point is that the typical sound of a straight-six almost
like a turbine is absolutely incomparable, with straight-six power units at
BMW having stood for fascinating engine technology in BMW cars for more than
seven decades.
Maximum supremacy in running refinement and performance.
Output of the new six-cylinder will be in approximately the same range as
on BMW’s 1.3-litre straight-four power units. Torque, on the other hand,
will be right at the top of the range, even in comparison with the largest
motorcycle engines, such superior power and muscle coming inter alia from
engine capacity of no less than 1.6 litres.
The engine’s power and performance characteristics are equally impressive,
offering 130 Nm or 96 lb-ft of torque from just 2,000 rpm and at the same
time revving up almost to 9,000 rpm – a dynamic potential quite unparalleled
in the tourer segment. This alone qualifies the engine of the Concept 6 as
the ideal power unit for a wide range of different motorcycles.
suspension technology and equipment
The suspension of the BMW Motorrad Concept 6 is built around a light-alloy
bridge frame as well as Duolever and lightweight Paralever arms holding and
guiding the wheels front and rear. Seventeen-inch HP forged wheels as well
as the extra-large brake system with its six-piston fixed callipers emphasise
the sporting look of the new machine and its high level of technology.
Powerful character for pure motorcycling joy - the BMW R1200R.
The 1200cc generates an output of 109 bhp and 115 Nm of torque. The perfect
suspension has no trouble at all with the weight of 223 kg (fully fuelled).
You could load up the same again and still enjoy the almost playful and truly
convincing handling of this motorcycle. Combined with exemplary safety equipment,
a timeless yet modern, high-quality and sporty design, the BMW R1200R is truly
a multi-talented motorcycle.
The BMW R 1200 R is a classic roadster, yet one which is far
ahead of its time thanks to its state-of-the-art technology.
But its confident attitude doesn’t come by accident. After all, 80 kW
(109 hp) and 115 Nm peak torque are bound to make a name for themselves. The
unique style of the R 1200 R is a testament to the fact that only true originals
can be one of a kind. The R 1200 R is a superb all-around talent on the road.
One the one hand it is a powerful and sporty curve raider, while on the other
it is a comfortable yet unflappable travel companion on longer tours. The
R 1200 R can be tailor-made to the rider’s needs with a wide array of
accessories. Whether it’s a sporty, a traditional or a more touring-oriented
naked bike you desire, the BMW R 1200 R is always a faithful companion.

As far as 2-cylinder fans are concerned, first-class touring has a memorable
abbreviation - and it’s been around for 30 years: RT. For long-haul travellers
there can hardly be any other term which has always stood for perfectly conceived
motorcycling concept from start to finish: excellent wind and weather protection,
optimum ergonomics, highly convenient operation combined with a top-class
chassis fitted with the unique optional extras ASC and ESA II*. In the touring
segment, these features probably define the ultimate benchmark of innovation.
Even though the R 1200 RT cuts a superb figure everywhere with its dynamic
new design, everything about it sends out the message: built to cover thousands
of miles, preferably in one go.
Then there is this fascinating mixture of distinctive engine and big bike
dynamics. The characteristic “boxer” supremacy has been further
enhanced in the current version: the engine’s crowning glory is now the
radial DOHC** valve operating system from the HP2 Sport, though here designed
for greater torque and without any loss of running smoothness: maximum torque
120 Nm, at 6000 rpm, rated output still at 81 kW (110 bhp). This means a tangible
increase in thrust from the lower engine speed range through to above the
medium range. The new valve control in the exhaust system ensures a discreet
but more dynamic sound.
Climb aboard - there's a whole world out there waiting to be discovered.
With a power output of 110 bhp, and 115 Nm of torque, the BMW R1200RT is a
motorcycle built for beautiful touring moments. The chassis incorporates the
BMW Motorrad Telelever and Paralever for ease of handling, while the EVO brake
with the partially integral version of BMW Motorrad Integral ABS ensures maximum
safety. The combination of aerodynamically optimized fairing and an electrically
adjustable windshield offers excellent protection against the elements, and
the class-leading ergonomics mean rider and pillion passenger can enjoy the
freedom of the open road in complete comfort.
Specifications of this calibre make this supersports machine not only an absolute
highlight in terms of its power-to-weight ratio and performance, but also,
equipped with Race ABS and DTC Dynamic Traction Control, a new benchmark
in terms of riding dynamics, safety and innovation.
Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport has been playing an active role in the World
Superbike Championship since the beginning of the 2009 racing season,
the new S 1000 RR setting the foundation for the production-based racing
machines ridden by BMW Motorrad's two works riders Troy Corser and
Ruben Xaus.
Precisely this is why the new S 1000 RR also applies this concept with its
proven fortes and advantages. But even while the S 1000 RR, in its concept
teaming up a straight-four power unit and an aluminium bridge frame, may
appear at fi rst sight to have similarities with some competitors, the Development
Team at BMW Motorrad has succeeded in enhancing the existing status of this
concept in virtually every respect.
As a result, the S 1000 RR offers not only a wide range of USPs in terms of
technology, performance, and design, but also, through its particularly compact
overall layout, clearly demonstrates the high school of European engineering
in
the supersports four-cylinder segment.
The two intake and exhaust valves per cylinder made of extra-light titanium
are
operated by very small and equally light single cam followers. In conjunction
with
the short sprocket driving the camshaft via an intermediate gear, this ensures
supreme revving qualities at the highest speeds as well as exact maintenance
of
valve timing combined with very compact dimensions.
The use of extremely small and light cam followers furthermore gives the
engineer greater freedom in choosing the ideal valve lift curves and, accordingly,
in selecting optimum performance characteristics on both road and track.
All engine components are particularly compact and light, limiting weight
of the
overall engine without ancillaries to 59.8 kg (131.8 lb) and keeping the entire
power unit very slim and slender.
Optional extras and accessories for a wide range of customisation.
The usual wide range of highlights from BMW Motorrad is naturally available
as
before for customising the new BMW S 1000 RR supersports.
Going beyond even the high-performance technology featured as standard on
the BMW S 1000 RR, this new range of extras and special equipment enables
the particularly dedicated, genuinely sporting rider to enhance the performance
of his machine to an even higher level.
So what did BMW do? It found some rounded-off valve covers
trendy some 40 years ago — good start — but then furnished their new old timer
with Japanese Showa suspension (a first) and eight Brembo pistons biting on a
pair of floating discs (a radical departure). There are also 40mm Bing carbs,
an emissions afterburning circuit, Paralever and a socket into which
sophisticated electronic diagnostic equipment can be plugged. Out popped the
R100R; the most advanced boxer-powered BMW in its 69 year history. Result:
future retro? Something strange at any rate.
Unofficially, all the horizonatally opposed flat-twins (the Rs,
aka boxers) are retro bikes anyway. Someone needed to say it out loud, that's
all, which, with a liquid-cooled four-valve flat-twin due to launch next year,
BMW can now do — cashing in on the stampede for modern classics in the
process. There is, however, more to the R100R than a junked fairing and wire
wheels. At 20 paces it's a random bitsa, at ten it's a R100GS trailie wearing
street running gear and chrome. Not quite Supermotard but not full-blown retro
either.
That monolith beneath the tank is 980cc of Paris-Dakar
inspired GS motor and five-speed gearbox. It gets GS big-bore carbs (other
street Rs have 32mm Bings) and a smidgen more torque than the R100RS/RT — 60
snoozey bhp at 6500rpm, 56 fat lb.ft at just 3750rpm. The double-loop steel
frame is GS, too: same laid-back wheelbase (longer than street Rs), same
trailie rake and trail but with 18 and 17 inch wheels, road suspension and
narrow bars (because the suffix R is for "road").
The forks, so often too long and soft on BMWs, are not only
Japanese but have recalculated spring and damping rates over much reduced
travel 135mm compared to the R100RS' 175mm. The rear unit has a longer
than normal stroke but is adjustable for rebound damping as well as preload.
GS/K1 Paralever, the double-jointed swing-arm/drive shaft which effectively
reduces torque-induced pitching, finds its way onto a pure-roads R for the
first time. It has the lowest of all BMW seat heights and only the plain R80
weighs less fuelled up — and that hasn't a capacious 24 litre tank swiped from
a GS and given a golden oldie amethyst paint job.
Introducing the new R 1200 S, BMW Motorrad is proudly presenting the
most powerful production Boxer the world has ever seen - a machine standing
out clearly from all other models in the range. This new addition to
the Boxer series is following in the footsteps of the successful R 1100
S, with the focus clearly on sporting performance and dynamic riding
characteristics. This expression of superior
performance and sporting power is borne out from the start by the athletic
looks of the R 1200 S: From the front fairing with
the "kidney" grille so typical of BMW and the asymmetric dual
headlights all the way to the unmistakable silencer at the rear and the
LED tail lights,
each and every line and feature of this new model simply exudes power
and dynamism all the way.
It almost goes without saying
that BMW's new Boxer comes with all the features so typical of the
brand, such as a fully controlled catalytic converter, the single-wire
system for the on-board network complete with an electronic immobiliser,
a smooth and easy-shifting six-speed gearbox, maintenance-free shaft
drive with a single swinging arm, as well as Telelever front wheel
suspension. The specific set-up of the suspension and running gear
ensures extremely precise and smooth handling at all times further
enhanced by
the high-performance brake system: Optional BMW Motorrad ABS anti-lock
brakes combine low weight and fast response simply perfect for the sports
rider - in this case without the integral function but with on-demand
operation allowing the rider to deactivate ABS on the race track.
The wide range of BMW options
and accessories also reflects the customer's wishes and special requests.
The enthusiast seeking to highlight the looks
of his machine as a sporting performer, for example, while at the same
time enjoying each and every bend in the road, has - to mention just
two examples - the choice of an extra-wide rear wheel as well as the
high-performance Öhlins sports suspension with spring struts variable
in length. The most sporting and dynamic
Boxer of all times is ready to go!

He BMW G450X Sport Enduro is a unique motorcycle that completely redefines
enduro riding. That’s because it’s been designed from the ground
up to deliver the sort of off-road traction dreams are made of, with a single-cylinder
engine and a revolutionary swing-arm design. The result is a motorcycle that
is quite simply unstoppable.
BMW Motorrad has set yet another milestone in the company's
80-year offroad tradition. It is the first uncompromising, pure-blooded sports
enduro to be produced in the popular 450cc class and to have been developed
especially for enduro use, fit for taking part in the most demanding contests
in the world.
In addition to the usual standard features, an optional extra is available
in the form of a slip-on racing silencer (without ABE and not homologated
for on-road use), which serves to further enhance the technical concept of
the G 450 X as a pure-blooded, uncompromising sports enduro. Its main benefit
compared to the standard silencer is that it is around one kilogram lighter.
The stainless steel manifold, designed as a combined reflective and absorptive
silencer, fulfils FIM regulations, is easy to assemble, and reduces the G
450 X's dry weight in competition conditions to no more than 110 kilograms.
The calibration of the rear strut has also been modified, with the result
that its damping characteristic now also displays a more progressive line,
favouring more sensitive response characteristics. Ergonomics have been improved
with a new seat design; it is now filled with soft foam and also displays
an enlarged radius in the upper thigh area. The new design features increased
comfort and affords the rider increased control over his machine.
The design of the new G 450 X is oriented towards the successful factory
racing models of the BMW Motorrad Motorsport team, with matching, gold-anodised
fork inner tubes.

he BMW G450X Sport Enduro is a unique motorcycle that completely redefines enduro riding. That’s because it’s been designed from the ground up to deliver the sort of off-road traction dreams are made of, with a single-cylinder engine and a revolutionary swing-arm design.
And now, numerous technical optimisations have been planned for the BMW G 450 X in the model year 2010. For instance, a new dataset has been developed for the ECU (engine control unit) of the bike's digital engine management system. This results not only in an improvement in fuel consumption (4.3 l/100km versus 4.5 l/100km @ 90km/h) but also a reduction in engine break torque, improved start characteristics and more sensitive responses, particularly with load changes.
What makes the G 450 X so unique? It's the way it's engineered. Quite simply, there is technology on this machine that is totally revolutionary. First off, the countershaft sprocket and swingarm are on the same pivot, which keeps chain tension uniform at all times for better power delivery. The clutch is smaller and mounted directly on the crankshaft which means less heat and stress on the plate. A feisty, fuel injected, easy-starting engine that's mounted forward in a stainless steel, cradle-less frame puts serious, power to the ground, while an extra-long swingarm creates unstoppable traction. Add a gas tank under the seat for a lower center of gravity, no linkage Ohlin's shock, and a forward-mounted airbox, and this is a 450 cc thumper that stands alone as the most original machine to hit the dirt in years.
